ChatGPT Ads for local and home service businesses

People ask ChatGPT to help them fix, plan and hire: a leak under the sink, a kitchen remodel, a move across town. Local services are one of the categories OpenAI’s ads focus on, and location targeting down to cities and postal codes keeps your budget inside the area you serve.

Fit

Where local businesses stand

  • Local services are in scope. OpenAI’s ad policy names local services among the few consumer categories ads focus on while the program is young.
  • You can target your service area. Standard campaigns can target regions, cities, markets and postal codes where OpenAI offers them, not just countries.
  • Leads and bookings are measurable. OpenAI’s standard events include a lead form or contact request and a booked appointment.
  • Tests can start small. The minimum daily budget per campaign is set by your billing currency: $25 in US dollars, 15 in euros or pounds.

Policy

Is your service allowed?

Most home and local services are fine. Some local businesses fall under OpenAI’s rules for regulated categories instead.

Targeting

Reach only the area you serve

  • Go below country level. Standard campaigns can target states or regions, cities, markets and postal codes where available. Options vary by country, so search for your area during setup to see what’s offered.
  • Include, don’t exclude. Location targeting works by inclusion: add the places you serve rather than excluding the rest.
  • Match your real service area. OpenAI’s advertiser policy says you may not misrepresent your business location or service area.
  • Split areas that differ. Our view: if prices, travel time or demand differ between areas, give each its own campaign or ad group, so budgets and landing pages can differ too.
  • New accounts may start at home. Some new self-serve accounts can advertise only in their home country at first. For a local business that’s rarely a problem.

Context hints

Describe the job, not the trade

People rarely ask ChatGPT for “a plumber”. They describe the problem and ask what to do. Context hints, set per ad group, let you describe those situations, and OpenAI says they aren’t exact-match keywords.

BusinessKeyword-style (weak)The situation (stronger)
Plumberplumber, emergency plumber, plumbing near meHomeowners with a leak under the kitchen sink who want it fixed before it damages the floor
House cleaningcleaners, cleaning service, maidRenters moving out who need a deep clean to get their deposit back
Moversmovers, moving companyFamilies moving across town who need help packing and a weekend moving date
Landscapinglandscaping, lawn careNew homeowners with an overgrown yard who want a garden that’s easy to look after
Illustrative examples written for this page. Only describe services you really offer in the places you target. OpenAI’s guidance: Write context hints, Help Center.

Send each ad to the page for that service, not your homepage, and make sure the page loads for OpenAI’s crawlers, OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot. Our context hints guide has more examples.

Measurement

Tracking forms, bookings and calls

What happensEvent to send
Someone fills in your quote or contact formlead_created: OpenAI’s event for a lead form or a request for contact.
Someone books a visit or consultation onlineappointment_scheduled: OpenAI’s event for a booked meeting, demo or consultation.
Someone calls youThere’s no phone-call event type, but the Conversions API accepts phone_call as the action source, so your server or call-tracking tool can send a qualified call as lead_created. OpenAI can only credit it to an ad if it can match it, through the click reference or customer details you send.

  • Send events with the Measurement Pixel on your site, the Conversions API from your server or booking system, or both with shared event IDs so nothing counts twice.
  • Add a value to lead events if you know roughly what a lead is worth, so reports show more than a count.
  • Our view: optimize on form leads or bookings, and treat call conversions as a bonus until you know how many OpenAI can match. Our Conversions API guide covers server-side events.
  • Tag every ad with UTM parameters so the visits have their own row in your analytics. Here’s why that matters.

Questions

Local services questions

Can we target just our city?

Yes, where OpenAI offers that city as a location. Search for it during campaign setup. You can also target regions, markets and postal codes where available.

Do we pay per lead?

No. ChatGPT Ads bill per click or per 1,000 impressions, even for campaigns optimized for leads. Your cost per lead comes out of the auction; the calculator estimates it from your numbers.

Do we need a website?

Yes. Every ad links to a web page that OpenAI reviews, and it has to load and let OpenAI’s crawlers in. App-store links, documents and deep links may not give OpenAI enough to review.

Can a dental practice or clinic advertise?

Only in the US, and only if OpenAI approves you, case by case. Health services outside the US are generally prohibited, and ads never appear next to personal health conversations.

What does a first test cost?

The platform minimum is set by your billing currency, $25 a day per campaign in US dollars. What you need depends on what a job is worth and how many leads you want before deciding. Our 30-day test plan shows how to size it, and our fees are on the pricing page.
