Shopping and product feed ads
Product-feed campaigns turn your catalog into ChatGPT ads, filled from each product’s image, link and price. We build and maintain the feed, connect Shopify or your store, and track every order back to the ad.

How it works
Product feeds, as OpenAI documents them
| Topic | How it works | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Format | A UTF-8 CSV file with one row per product or variant, uploaded to your feed over SFTP. | Developer docs |
| Updates | The Delta API updates prices and availability for existing products between full uploads. | Developer docs |
| Eligibility | Each product carries separate flags for ChatGPT search, checkout and ads, so one feed can serve all three. | Developer docs |
| Ad template | A product-feed ad group holds one product ad template; each ad takes its image and link from the product. | Developer docs |
| Shopify | The ChatGPT Ads app syncs your catalog and commerce events. It’s available to all US Shopify merchants, and OpenAI says other ad markets will follow shortly. | Help Center |
| Sales data | Attributed sales and ROAS in Ads Manager come from order_created purchase events. | Developer docs |

Paid vs organic
Product ads aren’t shopping results
ChatGPT also shows product results when people shop. OpenAI says those results are selected independently and aren’t ads, so there’s no way to pay for a place in them.
Product ads are separate, labeled placements that you pay for. The same product data can support both, because each product in the feed carries its own eligibility flags for search, checkout and ads. But ranking in the organic results isn’t something an ad budget can buy.

From you
What we need to start
- Access to your product catalog: Shopify admin, or an export from your store platform
- Permission to install apps, if you’re on Shopify
- Access to your checkout or tag manager, so purchases can be tracked
- Margins by product line, so bids reflect what each sale is worth
Questions
About product feed ads
Do we need Shopify?
No. Any store can send a product feed as a CSV file over SFTP. The Shopify app just makes setup and syncing quicker where it’s available.
How often does the feed update?
As often as you upload it. Price and availability changes can also go through the Delta API between full uploads.
Will product ads get us into ChatGPT’s shopping results?
No. OpenAI keeps shopping results separate from ads, and a place in them can’t be bought.
How are sales tracked?
Through order_created purchase events sent by the pixel, the Conversions API or the Shopify app. Ads Manager reports attributed sales and ROAS from those events.
