ChatGPT Ads for law firms

Since August 2026, law firms in the US can advertise in ChatGPT, as long as they’re licensed where the ad is shown. Here’s what OpenAI’s policy allows, how to keep campaigns inside your jurisdictions, and what to settle with your compliance team before launch.

Fit

Where law firms stand

  • Legal services are allowed in the US. Version 1.5 of OpenAI’s ad policy, in August 2026, permitted them.
  • Only where you’re licensed. The policy allows legal ads only when the advertiser is licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction where the ad is shown.
  • Not outside the US. Ads for legal services in every other country are prohibited for now.
  • Advice conversations are open. Since version 1.1, in April 2026, conversations asking for legal advice aren’t blocked from ads as a whole category. Sensitive conversations still are.

Policy

What OpenAI’s rules say

The rules for legal advertisers come from two OpenAI sources: the ad policy and the eligibility table in its Help Center.

Eligibility tableLegal services: allowed in the US, not allowed in other countries. The condition given is that US advertisers must be licensed to practice law in the US to serve ads to US users.Help Center
ApprovalThe policy says legal services, like financial and health services, are being rolled out gradually, with approvals reviewed manually case by case.Ad policies

Legal education and mediaMay be allowed where no legal services are offered, such as law podcasts or LSAT preparation courses.Ad policies
Checked on 27 September 2026. The policy ties the license to the jurisdiction where the ad is shown; the Help Center table says licensed in the US. Our view: follow the stricter reading.

Targeting

Keep every ad inside your jurisdictions

The licensing rule makes location targeting the most important setting for a law firm. OpenAI’s tools make it workable:

  • Target states, not the whole country. Standard campaigns can target states or regions, cities, markets and postal codes where available. Include only the states where your lawyers are licensed.
  • Include, don’t exclude. Targeting works by inclusion. Excluding other states isn’t the same as including yours.
  • One campaign per jurisdiction. Our view: a multi-state firm is easier to keep compliant with a campaign for each state or group of states, each linking to a page for that jurisdiction.
  • Federal practice areas. If your practice is federal, such as immigration, ask OpenAI how it applies the jurisdiction rule before targeting states where your lawyers aren’t admitted.

OpenAI’s advertiser policy also forbids misrepresenting your location, service area or eligibility to advertise in a market. Our targeting guide covers the settings in detail.

Content rules

What your ads can say

  • No promises you can’t keep. Ads must be truthful, with no unfounded claims about outcomes, pricing, capabilities or affiliations. The scams policy also bans implausible offers such as guaranteed financial returns.
  • Services, not causes. The policy lists immigration among the legal services firms can advertise. But ads that meaningfully reference sensitive social issues, immigration included, aren’t allowed, and nor is advocacy on government action such as immigration enforcement. Our view: describe the service plainly, such as help with a visa application, and keep politics out of it.
  • Consistent from ad to page. OpenAI reviews the ad, its image and its landing page together, and the page must load for its crawlers.
  • Some conversations stay off limits. Ads don’t appear in conversations OpenAI treats as sensitive, such as emotionally reliant ones, even when the subject is legal.

Your professional rules apply as well. State rules on lawyer advertising cover ChatGPT ads like any other advertising, and they vary by state, for example on required labels, disclaimers, testimonials and keeping copies of ads. Have whoever handles your compliance review the ads and landing pages before launch. This page describes OpenAI’s rules; it isn’t legal advice.

Context hints

Describe the client’s situation

People bring legal questions to ChatGPT as stories, not search terms. Context hints, set per ad group, describe the situations your practice helps with.

PracticeKeyword-style (weak)The situation (stronger)
Estate planningwill lawyer, estate planning attorneyParents of young children who want a will and a guardianship plan in place
Business lawbusiness attorney, LLC lawyerFounders starting a company with a co-founder who need an operating agreement

Immigrationimmigration lawyer, visa attorneyEmployers sponsoring a skilled hire who need help with the visa petition
Illustrative examples written for this page. Only describe services your firm offers in the states you target. OpenAI’s guidance: Write context hints, Help Center.

For tracking, send lead_created when someone submits your contact form and appointment_scheduled when they book a consultation. Our view: never put details of a person’s legal matter into event data. OpenAI’s events don’t need them.

Questions

Law firm questions

Can law firms advertise on ChatGPT?

Yes, in the US, when the firm is licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction where the ad is shown. OpenAI permitted legal services in version 1.5 of its ad policy, in August 2026.

Can we advertise outside the US?

No. OpenAI’s policy prohibits ads for legal services outside the US for now.

Can our ads appear when someone asks ChatGPT a legal question?

They can. Since April 2026, legal advice conversations aren’t blocked from ads as a whole category. Conversations OpenAI treats as sensitive still are.

What about document preparation services run by non-lawyers?

The policy lists document preparation among the legal services that need an advertiser licensed to practice law where the ad is shown. General legal education, such as courses or podcasts, may be allowed where no legal services are offered.

Is approval guaranteed if we’re licensed?

No. OpenAI says approvals in legal, financial and health categories are reviewed manually, case by case, and every ad and landing page is reviewed. Since version 1.6 it can also decline ads for other reasons.
