ChatGPT Ads tracking and measurement
If conversions aren’t tracked, a ChatGPT Ads test doesn’t succeed or fail, it just ends. We set up OpenAI’s pixel and Conversions API, connect them to your analytics and CRM, and make sure the numbers agree before you spend.

Included
What we set up
- OpenAI’s Measurement Pixel on your site, connected to your consent banner
- The Conversions API for events your server confirms, such as paid orders or qualified leads (how it works)
- Shared event IDs, so a conversion sent both ways counts once
- A UTM naming convention and a ChatGPT Ads channel in GA4
- Attribution windows chosen to match your sales cycle
- A reconciliation check across Ads Manager, GA4 and your CRM, with the expected gaps written down
The toolkit
OpenAI’s measurement tools
What each piece does, straight from OpenAI’s documentation.
| Tool | What it does | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel | Runs in the visitor’s browser and records actions on your website. | Developer docs |
| Conversions API | Sends actions recorded by your server, such as confirmed orders. | Developer docs |
| Both together | Send the same event name and event ID through both, and OpenAI recognizes the duplicate. | Developer docs |
| Standard events | Include lead_created, appointment_scheduled, order_created, checkout_started, registration_completed, trial_started and subscription_created. | Developer docs |
| Consent | The pixel treats consent as granted unless your site sets it to false before the pixel starts, so sites that need consent must wire it up. | Developer docs |
| Attribution | Click-through windows of 7, 14 or 30 days; view-through off or 1 day. Changing them changes reporting, not bidding or billing. | Help Center |
| Delay | Allow 24–48 hours for attributed conversions to appear in reports. | Help Center |

A common problem
Why ChatGPT Ads traffic shows up as “direct”
If an ad’s destination URL carries no tracking parameters, your analytics may not recognize the visit as coming from an ad and can file it under direct traffic. OpenAI lets you add your own UTM parameters to each destination URL, and they stay attached to ad clicks.
We set one naming convention for campaigns, ad groups and ads, so every conversion in GA4 can be traced to the ad that earned it. Our guide to why ad clicks show up as Direct explains the setup.

What to track
The events that matter by business
- Lead generation: lead_created and appointment_scheduled, plus qualified leads from your CRM through the Conversions API.
- Ecommerce: order_created with order value, and checkout_started to see where people drop off.
- Software: trial_started and subscription_created.
Only standard events can be used for conversion-optimized bidding. Custom events can be tracked, but campaigns can’t optimize toward them.

Questions
About tracking
Do we need the Conversions API if we have the pixel?
Not always, but it helps. The pixel only sees what happens in the browser. The Conversions API can send events your server confirms, like paid orders or leads your sales team qualified. With shared event IDs, a conversion sent both ways still counts once.
Why don’t Ads Manager clicks match GA4 sessions?
They count different things. Ads Manager counts valid clicks on the ad; GA4 counts sessions it can attribute, which depends on tracking parameters, consent and whether the page finished loading. We reconcile the two and document the gap you should expect.
Can CRM or offline conversions be counted?
Yes. The Conversions API accepts events from your server, which can include conversions recorded in your CRM.
What about privacy rules?
The pixel has a consent setting, and OpenAI asks for personal identifiers to be normalized and hashed before they’re sent. We connect the pixel to your consent banner, but your own legal advisers should confirm what your business needs to do.
