The basics

What are ChatGPT Ads?

Paid placements that appear below the end of a ChatGPT response, labeled as sponsored and visually separate from the answer. Businesses buy them at auction, mostly through OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager. Our setup guide covers how to start.

Who sees ChatGPT ads?

People on the Free and Go plans, and people using ChatGPT logged out. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don’t get ads, and nor do accounts identified as belonging to under-18s. More in who sees ChatGPT ads.

Do ads change what ChatGPT says?

No. OpenAI says ads run on separate systems from the chat model, and advertisers can’t shape, rank or alter ChatGPT’s answers.

Which countries can advertise?

Businesses based in the 63 countries on OpenAI’s self-serve list can buy through Ads Manager. Some new accounts can advertise only in their home country at first. The availability tracker lists every country.

Is my industry allowed?

Consumer categories such as household goods, local services, travel and digital products are the early focus. Financial, health and legal services are restricted, mostly to the US, and categories such as gambling, alcohol, adult content and political ads aren’t allowed. See ChatGPT Ads by industry.

Costs and budgets

How much do ChatGPT Ads cost?

There’s no price list. An auction sets prices, and you pay per 1,000 impressions or per click. Conversion-optimized campaigns still bill per click or per impression, never per conversion. Our cost guide explains the details.

Is there a minimum budget?

Yes, a minimum daily budget per campaign set by your billing currency: 25 USD, 15 EUR, 15 GBP or 725 INR, for example. OpenAI lists 30 currencies, all in our availability tracker.

What should I bid?

For click campaigns, OpenAI suggests starting maximum bids of $3–5. It publishes no CPM benchmark and no recommended bid for conversions. Our bidding guide helps you choose.

How is spend billed?

After delivery. Self-serve accounts are charged to the saved card when unpaid spend reaches the account’s payment threshold, and at the end of each month.

How long should a first test run?

Plan for weeks, not days: conversions take 24–48 hours to report and delivery varies day to day. Our 30-day test plan sets out a schedule, and the calculator sizes the budget.

Targeting and creative

Are there keywords?

No. You write context hints, short descriptions of the situations your offer fits, and OpenAI says they aren’t exact-match keywords. See our context hints guide.

How can I target an audience?

By location, down to cities and postal codes where available, by platform, and with custom audiences built from your own customer lists. OpenAI documents no age, gender or interest targeting. More in targeting options.

What does an ad look like?

A chat card shows your name and icon, a title of up to 50 characters, copy of up to 100 and a square image. Stores can also run product ads from a feed. Our formats guide lists every spec.

Tracking and results

How do I track conversions?

With OpenAI’s Measurement Pixel on your site, its Conversions API from your server, or both with shared event IDs. Our tracking guide walks through the setup.

Are there performance benchmarks?

Not yet. OpenAI says the platform doesn’t have benchmarks across advertisers or industries. Judge a test on your own cost per conversion and margins; are ChatGPT Ads worth it explains how.

Why are my ads not showing?

Usually a blocker higher up: verification, a paused campaign, an unapproved ad, a spent weekly budget or a landing page OpenAI’s crawler can’t reach. Work through our troubleshooting checklist.

Organic visibility

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT’s answers?

No. OpenAI says ads don’t influence answers, and product results in shopping aren’t ads. See paid and organic visibility in ChatGPT.

How does my site appear in ChatGPT search?

It has to let OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot crawler in. Beyond that, OpenAI ranks results itself and doesn’t guarantee placement. Our guide to how ChatGPT chooses its sources covers the rest.

Working with an agency

Who owns the ad account?

Your business. OpenAI doesn’t let agencies create accounts for clients, so you create the account and invite the agency as an Admin, Member or Viewer. Our guide to giving an agency access explains the roles.

How much does ChatGPT Ads Agency charge?

There’s no fixed price list. We quote each account after a strategy call, based on your markets, products, tracking and reporting needs. Our pricing page lists what each service covers. Ad spend is separate and paid to OpenAI.

Do I need an agency?

No. Eligible businesses can run campaigns themselves in Ads Manager. An agency helps if you want the setup, tracking and optimization done for you. Our services page explains what we do.

Are you an OpenAI partner?

No. ChatGPT Ads Agency is independent and isn’t affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by OpenAI. OpenAI has no agency certification for ChatGPT Ads.
